Implementation of technical and information systems in environmental management

Abstract


Purpose. The aim of the paper is to recognise the impacts and effects of an enterprise on the environment by means of environmental management instruments in offensive, defensive, operative and strategic dimensions. It will thus present different variants of implementation, various functions and effects of the deployment of technical systems designed to inform about the environmental situation implemented in an enterprise. It will also assess their practical application. The main aim of the paper is to analyse technical systems designed to inform about the environmental situation from the perspective of enterprises’ preparation to take decisions that are of key importance for the environment. This ensures an effective implementation and combination of various environmental management instruments in an enterprise. The implementation of objectives connected with the environmental management in the area of improving the effectiveness of environmental actions taken in an enterprise enables the use of a tool in the form of ecological controlling.

Methodology. As the paper addresses the implementation of objectives connected with environmental management in the aspect of improving the effectiveness of environmental protection in an enterprise from the theoretical perspective, the methodology oscillates around creating knowledge and editing texts, enabling the achievement of a specific goal implied by ecological controlling.

Results. The aim of the paper has been achieved by indicating various applications of environmental management instruments in an enterprise during performing tasks at the operational level. It has been shown that a lot of instruments require significant investments connected with data registration, as information that is important from the ecological perspective is often not properly gathered or processed. However, a wide range of applications of technical systems designed to inform about the environmental situation allow enterprises to systematically implement these instruments without significant financial outlays. Both from the economic and ecologic perspectives, it’s worth stressing that the results illustrating the implementation of the systems proposed by the authors of this paper are so reliable and significant that if integrated with the structures existing in an enterprise they will contribute to the environmental management at the strategic level.

The theoretical contribution. Academic literature review has shown the existence of a great number of assumptions concerning the issue of implementing technical systems designed to inform about the environmental situation, connected for instance with the calculation of environmental costs. The choice of an appropriate assumption depends on individual needs of individual enterprises. This provides an opportunity, and at the same time a challenge, to create a technical system for environmental management and ecological controlling that is specific for a given enterprise. In the case of such a spectacular choice for an enterprise, i.e. the use of instruments taking into account the relationship between the environmental management and instruments, it is very important for an effective environmental protection implemented within an enterprise that the instruments are compatible and can be combined. Given the constantly increasing interest of enterprises in technical systems for environmental management, the authors predict permanent increase in the popularisation and use of particularly those environmental management instruments that have been presented in detail in this paper.

Practical implications. An in-depth analysis of technical systems designed to inform about the environmental situation allowed the authors to indicate the practical aspects of their use both in the form of simple spread sheets used for the purpose of environmental protection and in the form of comprehensive IT solutions for detailed control of the flow of goods and energy in enterprises.

Small, medium-sized and large enterprise which mainly operate in the manufacturing sector (e.g. chemical industry, metal treatment and processing industry) rely on the systems proposed by the authors to solve tasks connected with environmental management and ecological controlling.

Implementation of technical systems designed to inform about the environmental situation constitutes a solution and a useful instrument during performance of various environmental protection tasks, controlling related processes, identifying optimal potentials as well as internal and external communication.
