The Areas of Inefficiency in Enterprise Information Systems: Selected Research Results

Milos Koch

Purpose. In the current market environment, a company's success depends on the efficiency and effectiveness of business operations as on a complex system of related phenomena. The definition of sustainable development (1987, the Brundtland Report) calls for companies to evaluate their economic results, and to act responsibly in the environmental, social areas. In recent years this evaluation is enlarged to the area of corporate governance. At present, the deployment of corporate information systems have strong links to all above mentioned areas. Information and communication technologies can be an important phenomenon affecting the corporate sustainable performance. For this reason, appropriate ways are searched for indication of problem areas and solving problems, i.e. to design, develop and implement methods for company's information system assessment. Already in 1998, Kar Yan Tam has supported active research in the area of the impact of information and communication technologies investments on company performance: if most of the results has been performed in the United States it is necessary to realize such research in other countries. In the Czech Republic these issues have been more supported after political changes in 1989 with the market development. The paper is based on research of efficiency and effectiveness of company's information systems, and describes the most frequent problems at this area. The research is performed through the Zefis web-portal designed and developed by Koch over ten years. This portal has been completely upgraded and modified in 2014. Now, it provides new facts and contexts that were required by portal users and researchers, and were proved (in the time development). Now the Zefis portal focuses also on environmental issues, provides more resources for benchmarking, statistics, and used quantitative methods offer many other outputs (opportunity for feedback, history, horizontal development, comparative statics approaches, etc.). The paper presents the current selected research outputs linked to the previous outputs of Koch and Chvatalova (2013; 2014). The current results provide a base for the evaluation of companies’ business operations so that they could behave more responsibly in their corporate sustainable performance, and they are able to innovate their company information systems. Therefore, they are more prepared for the changes in predictable or uncertain conditions.

Methodology. The Zefis portal uses methods, which consider company's information system as a union of the subsystems (hardware, software, orgware, peopleware, dataware, customers, suppliers, security), defines the degree of the information system balance, and uses quantitative statistics methods.

Results. This paper presents the current selected research outputs for company's information system assessments.

The theoretical contribution. The contribution of our paper is a feedback for future innovations in company.

Practical implications. Outputs offer an uncomplicated method of company's information system assessments.
