Intelligence and Sustainability of Public Utilities: Smart Metering of Water Supply and Usage

Abstract


Purpose. Nowadays question about usage of smart metering in field of public utilities is discussed more and more. Smart metering is possibility to use newest intelligent technologies in our daily lives. As well that can help to make public utilities more efficient and sustainable. So it is important to get know people about smart metering of water supply and usage process to help them make their own decision about choice of technologies and involvement in intelligent and sustainable public utilities providing.

The aim of the paper is to analyse existing water supply and usage process and assess smart metering of water supply and usage introduction process, in order to demonstrate how intelligent technologies usage can help to provide public utilities sustainability.

Methodology. Qualitative and quantitative research methods, based on process and actual data analysis, has been used to evaluate the water supply and usage. System dynamics method is used to model smart metering of water supply and usage.

Results. As result of research is developed smart metering of water supply and usage process evaluation using system dynamics method. As well identified key aspects in smart metering introduction process that can be important in decision making about smart meters use.

The theoretical contribution. Paper is based on theoretical information analysis about water metering and smart technologies, and existing case studies about smart metering of water supply and usage. Accomplished data analysis of assessing existing water supply and usage process.

The research is topical because it gives additional value to public utilities improvement and sustainability providing, using smart technologies.

Practical implications. Paper includes case study about public utilities (related to water) supply and usage in Valmiera City and analysis about option of smart metering introduction. This case study help to make sense of smart metering of water supply and usage introduction process.

This part should be included for research papers and if possible for theoretical papers as well.
