Abstract

Purpose. Georgia is an old country of agriculture, vine and wheat. Therefore, the agricultural production and village in general is particularly valuable for a Georgian man.

Despite the difficulties Georgia has faced since gaining the independence and in recent years more specifically, the agriculture of Georgia and its adjacent industrial branches have the potential to produce one-third of the country’s economics, and are capable of creating the major portion of the country’s export, increase the employment in rural areas of the country and compensate the food deficit in many regions of Georgia. To date, this potential has never been recognized or used in full. At present, the agricultural sector of Georgia faces a range of problems and challenges, and resolving them is one of the priorities in the country’s development and one of the major issues of political and economic discussions. The general evaluation of the agrarian sector and agricultural fields has a decisive importance for implementing the relevant strategies and policy. This question must be studied and subject to statistical analysis what is the major goal of the study.

Methodology. The study uses the methods of statistical observation, grouping and analysis – the methods of calculation of the generalized values, variation and time series analytical values. The work also gives the calculation of prediction values based on the trend establishment and correlation-regressive analysis methods.

Results. The analysis of the official statistics describing the present situation and subject-related studies was used to identify the modern trends of the agrarian sector of Georgia: almost half of the population of Georgia lives in the rural areas with low-productive farms oriented to meet one’s own demands being the major source of livelihood; an increasing proportion of the agricultural lands remains non-cultivated; the rate of unemployment is low and the number of self-employed increases; the specific weight of agriculture in GDP shows a decreasing trend, while the local output of the sector shows an increasing trend; extensive methods are used in the agricultural production. Despite a growing number of preventive measures taken and increasing volume of investments to develop the branch, the agrarian sector of Georgia still faces a number of problems and challenges. In the course of analysis of the strategy and concept developed by the government of the country oriented on the development of the sector and recommendations and programs offered by various international organizations, the priorities of the sector development were revealed. Thus, further development of this sector is vitally important both, for the safety and stability of the country.

The theoretical contribution. Application of the statistical methods to identify the developmental trend of the agrarian sector is very important. Consideration of all theoretical issues, identification of the major problems and ways to solve them are the major theoretical value of the article.

Practical implications(if applicable). The analysis of the official data and developmental trend are important to give the right assessment of the existing situation of the sector, deliver the signal information to the governmental structures, develop effective measures and determine the state policy.
